Park Visitor Dies in Single Car Accident

A 52-year old park visitor died from injuries received in a single car accident in Yellowstone National Park while traveling alone on the road between West Junction and Lake, approximately three miles east of West Thumb Junction. The incident occurred on Friday, June 24, 2005, at approximately 3:40 p.m.

The man was traveling northbound when witnesses say he apparently lost control of his vehicle while negotiating a curve. The vehicle hit a log bumper rail (curb stop) near the side of the road, rolled over, and came to rest on top of a rock by the side of the road.

The victim was wearing his seatbelt and was not ejected from the vehicle. The park was notified of the accident through a 9-1-1 cell phone call placed by a park visitor at the scene. Park personnel from Grant Village and Lake immediately responded to the location and provided emergency medical care. After assessing his condition, he was pronounced dead. The accident remains under investigation, and further information will be released when it becomes available. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
